Description

This galaxy group is located 250 million light years away in the constellation of Bootes at a declination of +9 degrees.

This image captures 10 galaxies of the group, all at a similar distance away, but several more galaxies of the group extend beyond the FOV of this image.  The group is anchored by the elliptical galaxy NGC 5423, the brightest and largest galaxy of the group.  This galaxy spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 150,000 light years.

The bright elliptical near the center of the image, NGC 5424, shows hints of possible shells from prior mergers. The two face-on galaxies, at the left and right edges of the image, have interesting structures, as does the edge-on galaxy on the left edge.  Some signs of disturbance and interaction are seen, especially with the pair at the left edge.
